Two Mexican-themed exhibitions and a free family festival come to the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art this spring. “Rafael Perea de la Cabada: Alien Heartland” and “Mexican Prints: Selections from the Gil Garcia and Marti Correa de Garcia Collection” go on display Feb. 23 through March 31. The exhibitions open with a free public reception Thursday, Feb. 23, from 4-6 p.m.

“Días de México: A Family Festival” continues this celebration of Mexico’s vibrant culture with a day of fun activities, crafts, music, dance, storytelling, food and more on Saturday, March 24, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in and around the museum. The event and most of the activities are free and open to families of all ages.

“Alien Heartland” offers a retrospective of Mexican-American artist Rafael Perea de la Cabada. Perea, who was born in Mexico City, spent the first half of his life in his native country before coming to California to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting at UC Santa Barbara. This exhibition includes drawings, prints, paintings and sculptures made in both countries, exploring themes of contemporary Mexican-American culture. Perea’s abstracted, expressive artwork is held in museum and private collections in California, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and several countries in Europe.

“Mexican Prints” showcases the holdings of local collectors Gil and Marti Correa de Garcia. The collection, which focuses on prints from the mid-20th century, emphasizes the vital graphic aesthetic of Mexico with work by artists including Francisco Toledo, Rufino Tamayo, Carlos Merida and others. Mr. Garcia is the lead architect of Garcia Architects and Advisors. He was a Santa Barbara city councilman for 10 years and has served on the boards of 90 non-profit organizations. He is on the board of Southern California Sister Cities International, past president of the United States/Mexico Sister Cities Association, and current president of the Santa Barbara/Puerto Vallarta Sister City Committee.

Mrs. Marti Correa de Garcia is the treasurer of the Santa Barbara/Puerto Vallarta Sister City Committee.

The Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call (805) 5656162 or e-mail museum@westmont.edu.

Website: http://westmontmuseum.org/MexicanExhibition.html

In conjunction with the exhibition, a full-color, 66 page catalogue has been published, which features images of the artist’s works; an introduction and acknowledgements by Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art Director Judy Larson, Ph.D.; an essay by Huffington Post critic Peter Frank, entitled Rafael Perea de la Cabada: Relations With The Audience; and design by Myopia.

ORIGINAL/MULTIPLE Following the red Thread
Artists of the Limited Edition project
OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday, February 4th, 2012 from 4-6pm
ELVERHOJ Museum
1624 Elverhoy Way, Solvang CA
Original/Multiple: Following the Red Thread, is an exhibition of thirteen prints by contemporary artists invited to participate in the Limited Edition Project. From October, 2010 to November 2011, selected artists made limited editions (25 identical pieces) in all manner of printmaking media: intaglio, relief, planographic, and digital. In order to explore the creative process and better understand how artists come to their images and the decisions that shape the images, each of these prints will be surrounded by work by these artists which connects to the limited edition print.

Printing twenty five etchings or woodcuts, silkscreen or mixed media works bespeaks a commitment to a particular image. Such an image or elements within that image is/are embedded in some conscious or unconscious way in the larger oeuvre of the artist. It is fascinating to find connections and repetitions in a single artist’s work: across disparities of time, medium, scale, color, dimension — some elements persist — as if the artist is driven to keep looking for meaning in certain ways of expressing, certain themes, even certain (sometimes unconsciously chosen) shapes or surfaces, compositions or other visualized ideas.

The show will include at least one print — the limited edition print — from each artist, and four to eight other images which bear upon, illuminate, and connect with it. In many cases, these other images are NOT prints, but paintings, sculptures, drawings, watercolors, collages, assemblages, books, mixed-media objects.

All of the LE prints and many of the supplemental works are for sale; during the Valentine Extravaganza, smaller works will be available for sale in the gift shop.

Participating artists: Stephanie Dotson, Dane Goodman, Carolyn Hubbs, Michael Jameson, Rafael Perea de la Cabada, Marie Schoeff, Libby Smith, Nicole Strasburg, Dug Uyesaka, Nina de Creeft Ward, Nina Warner, Teresa Zepeda, Pamela Zwehl-Burke.

View from Here provides a selection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photography from the permanent collection by artists currently living and working in Santa Barbara, and represents works acquired from 1955 through the present. Moreover, many of these artists have also made their impact on countless art students as educators at UC Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College.

Artists in the exhibition include Richard Aber, Phil Argent, Eric Beltz, Hilary Brace, Gary Brown, Nell Campbell, Irma Cavat, Anne Diener, Michael Dvortcsak, Dane Goodman, Mary Heebner, Gerald Incandela, Rafael Perea de la Cabada, Hank Pitcher, Keith Puccinelli, Harry Reese, William Rohrbach, Marie Schoeff, Ilene Segalove, Rick Stich, and Joan Tanner. While the exhibition presents only a fraction of the local talent, it speaks to the ongoing cultural vitality of an extraordinary place.

August 29, 2011 – Jan 21, 2012 press release
The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission presents an exhibition, Few Chosen by Many: A Berkus Selection, August 29, 2011 – Jan 21, 2012, and the reception will be held 1st Thursday, September 1, 2011, 5-8pm at the Channing Peake Gallery in the County Administration Building. The exhibition, drawn from The Barry Berkus and Family Art Collection, in memory of Gail Berkus, takes on a new twist, with community curators selecting one work each from the collection. Art appreciators from diverse careers and backgrounds chose a work that resonated with them and each one posts their reasons for their choice.

The “Few” in the title refers to the small selection of works by the curators, and the “Many” refers to the diversity of careers of those who were invited to choose a work from the Berkus Collection: accountant, educator, librarian, chef, museum guard, prosecutor, entrepreneur, hairstylist, veterinarian and horticulturist are among the many careers of the guest curators. Rita Ferri, the Curator of Collections for the County of Santa Barbara and organizer of this exhibition said, “I hope that viewers to the exhibition come away with the realization that liking and choosing art is not an activity limited to a few special people; that each of us makes choices each day; we all respond to different colors, images, and mediums. Many do this without a background in art history or curating. They have taught themselves over a lifetime to look at art critically and to appreciate it.”

Barry Berkus, noted Santa Barbara architect, art collector, and philanthropist, donated a large number of regional artworks from his collection to the County of Santa Barbara in 2006, through the County Arts Commission. All of the works given are by artists who live, or lived for an extended period, in the Santa Barbara area. This gift, The Barry Berkus and Family Art Collection, represents over 70 art works and spans 25 years of collecting work by area artists.

Mr. Berkus and his late wife, Gail, were recognized by Art News magazine as among the top 200 art collectors in the world. Their modern and contemporary collection was noted for its diversity and for large-scale artworks by such well known artists as Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Frank Stella, Nancy Graves, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Diebenkorn and Ed Ruscha. While recognized for their collection of internationally and nationally known artists’ artworks, the Berkus’ were also keenly interested in and supportive of Santa Barbara area artists. They bought work from the artists’ studios, galleries, and auctions. Berkus remains committed to art of the region as he continues to collect work of regional artists with his wife Jo Berkus.

A color catalog with essay by Josef Woodard and designed by The Lily Guild Temple of Design is available from the County Arts Commission at www.sbartscommission.org or 5683990.

1st Thursday Reception: August 4, 2011

The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara (AFSB) is pleased to announce a new solo exhibition, “Spaces We Touch/Espacios Que Tocamos,” by Rafael Perea de la Cabada. You are invited to attend a festive opening reception for the artist on Friday, July 15 from 5-7 pm. A 1st Thursday reception will be held on August 4 from 5-8 pm.

Rafael Perea de la Cabada has a philosophical approach to art, exploring fundamental human complexities. Multimedia layers complement the nuanced subtext of each piece, creating endless permutations of meaning which prompt intellectual thought and conversation. This exhibition is composed of two distinct but mutually referential bodies of work. Both series are connected through the visual exploration of sound and speech as “shape/space forming” and energy giving components of our daily life interactions.

“Informed by archetypal Jungian ideas, by a thorough familiarity with art history ranging from cave paintings and pictographs to tribal effigies, contemporary lyrical abstraction and symbolic figuration, they reveal rather than proclaim or inform.”

-Josine Ianco Starrels, Independent Curator, Los Angeles

Born in Mexico City, this award-winning artist has lived in Santa Barbara since 1987. Perea received a degree from the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking in Mexico City and went on to earn his MFA from UCSB. He has exhibited at many galleries and museums in Southern California including the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA), the Contemporary Arts Forum, The Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and the Hunsaker-Schlesinger Gallery in Santa Monica. His work is included in numerous public and private collections throughout Europe and the Americas.

Perea teaches at SB City College and has served as a Master Artist for multiple projects for both SBMA and The Arts Fund. He recently completed an important public art project in collaboration with designer Richard Irvine. The collaboration was part of the West Beach Improvement Project on the Santa Barbara waterfront, and includes three landmark designs of bronze and mosaic along the promenade. The Architectural Foundation exhibition leads up to Perea’s retrospective at Westmont College Museum of Art in 2012.

Rafael Perea de la Cabada and AFSB would like to specially thank the generous sponsors of this exhibit: Brian K. O’Connor, Attorney at Law; Fred Fisher, Trinity Capital Management LLC; David Dart DDS; Tim Quiroz; and The Arts Fund. The 1st Thursday reception will be presented in collaboration with the SB Downtown Organization.

The Architectural Foundation Gallery is located in the historic Acheson House on the corner of Garden and East Victoria Streets in Santa Barbara. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9 am to 2 pm, and by appointment. The gallery entrance is on Garden Street, and is accessible by ramp. We look forward to seeing you!

The work of R. Anthony Askew in this exhibition includes prints done in New Mexico, in the fall of 2010, that are influenced by the landscape and the energy of the southwest. In the abstract-expressionist tradition, inventive, direct and painterly, his monotype process enhances a child-like directness with emphasis on expressive color and brushstroke. Process is important to this artist as is tradition and ceremony in the sense that his art experience is in the creating, the activity of doing, seeing and inventing.

Recently, printmaking has led Bay Hallowell into a world of intuitive abstraction, populated by unexpected shapes and expressive color combination. Quieting the mind and slipping into a dreamlike state where thinking is associative rather than logical, she finds that visual surprises can emerge and evolve into meaningful images.

Rafael Perea de la Cabada believes the artist’s function in society is to act as an agent of change. For him, art has a transformative power. He finds find art making an endless mystery, a choice and a calling.

Dug Uyesaka presents work loosely based on explorations and experimentation with the medium. Dug’s prints are evidence of his fascination with mark making. His works convey a mood of movement; a shifting from one state to another based on natural phenomenon and his imagination.

Don Zimmerman’s figurative prints search out the visual poetry of the mundane activities and commonplace scenes of everyday life, art found in the Ordinary.

Interested in the Celtic notion of “thin place” that separates this world from the next and where the natural and the spiritual world intersect, Siu Zimmerman began a new series. Developed over the past nine months “Moving through the Thin Space” expresses, in abstract imagery, traveling toward the unknown, and the curiosity, mystery and ultimately hope of such a journey. This work also expresses the experience of developing the art itself.

Wesley Hurd and Rafael Perea de la Cabada,

Jacobs Gallery, at the Hult Center. February 11 to march 26, 2011. Eugene, Oregon.

Statement from the Artists

The idea for this exhibition came from the personal and collaborative friendship between these two west coast artists. Their long distance dialogue and creative interactions over twenty years has often produced work of similar intention and poetic spirit.

Surface and Silence exhibits work partially shaped by their shared views and experiences. The exhibition is composed of small scale mixed media works on paper and small canvases. For Perea and Hurd, the mental and physical complexities in the art making process are of foremost importance. Their work is formed from the exploratory labyrinths of matter, thought and spirit where “unexpected directions are expected”. The resulting artwork is a by-product of these explorations and it is intended to arrive unannounced as if from the back door without fanfare, but essential.

For them a completed work is a momentary visual recess in a larger journey. As it is in life, work is never “finished,” it just ceases to demand their attention. The title of the show indicates the artists’ shared conviction that art emerges from and within the connectedness of inner and outer life. The traces and imagery left on the surface betray inner precincts that lay in the silence where thought begins. As Rafael has said, “Art has a transformative power, a delicate volatility that triggers our craving for a deeper perceptual level.”

Importantly, Perea and Hurd believe that art comes alive in the shared investment of maker and viewer where its “currency of the soul” and potential resonance begins.

As with the writer of music, in these works the score has been “composed”. The receiving “performance” remains yielding to new directions and ”facing our own music” to become participants in the exploration.
